Screening on 35mm. Few films have expanded cinema’s philosophical horizons as profoundly as Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Following the discovery of a mysterious object beneath the lunar surface, the film traces humanity’s encounter with the unknown, mediated by HAL 9000, an apparently infallible intelligence whose serene logic reveals far-reaching ethical tensions. Across vast temporal and cosmic scales, Kubrick contemplates evolution, consciousness, technological agency and the limits of human knowledge. Almost 60 years after its release, the film remains an enigmatic meditation on origins and the possibility of meaning. This rare presentation screens from the only 35mm print in the UK, offering an opportunity to encounter Kubrick’s masterpiece in its original photochemical form. (incl. interval)
